list of things to do to prepare for your yearly exam

You know the one – must I say it? That exam that is recommended once a year to all women over 18 and requires the use of stirrups? Before your next appointment with the doctor, run through this checklist to help you feel like you’ve put forth your best effort to make this event as comfortable as you possibly can.

  • Take a shower. Clean yourself well.
  • Shave everywhere that might come in contact with the doctor.
  • Wear comfortable undergarments.
  • Add a panty liner (useful post-exam).
  • Wear clothes and shoes that are easily removed.
  • Drop children off at a prearranged location.
  • Bring reading material to take your mind off while you are waiting.
  • Pack flushable wipes for afterward.
  • Practice any relaxation/meditation exercises you know during the exam.
  • Treat yourself afterward to your favorite coffee or ice cream!

  • To the poster of the last comment, thank you for your professional advice. That is truly interesting. Talk about making an uncomfortable situation even more uncomfortable ;-)

  • As a nurse who works in an ob/gyn office, you should not shave for the week before an exam as some of the medications, etc used can cause skin irritation.
