list of items to gather in case of an emergency

No one likes to consider the unthinkable: fleeing your home, family in tow, with just the clothes on your back. Hopefully, there would be a chance to grab a few valuable things on your way out. It is a good idea to map out a plan in your mind, or even on paper, just in case.

  • Important Documents: Passports, Birth/Wedding Certificates (Good idea to purchase a fire safe for these).
  • Photos: If you have a digital camera, then many of your pictures should be uploaded to online photo albums such as dotphoto.com or shutterfly.com. Grab your most precious albums on the way out of the house.
  • Medication: You may be displaced from your home for a few days. Getting a another dosage may be a challenge.
  • Cash: Have an emergency stash of a variety of bills readily available for you grab on your way out.
  • Coats: If it is cold, you do not want to be trapped away from home without something to keep you warm.
  • Purse/Wallet: Always place these things somewhere near the primary door. Try to always keep your keys and cell phone in or near when not in use.

If you have up to 30 minutes of warning, be sure to grab these things as well:

  • 2 days worth of clothing: Pack a backpack with a change of clothing for everyone.
  • Some food and water: Some cans of food and bottles of water will get you through a few hours if necessary. Don’t forget to include something for your pet(s).
  • A First-Aid Kit: Bandages, pain relievers, ointments, etc.
  • Emergency Kit: Crank radio/flashlight, soap, towels, waterproof matches, can opener, garbage bags, etc.
