list of ways to celebrate the first day of autumn

Friday, September 23rd, is the first day of autumn. The ushering in of a new season can be an exciting time and there are numerous ways your family can celebrate.

autumn in Maine

  • Go for a fall nature hike
    • Make note of the signs of change (leaves changing color, fallen acorns, cooler breezes, etc).
  • Make a handprint wreath
    • Using autumn colored construction paper (red, orange, yellow and brown) trace handprints and glue in a wreath shape.
  • Apple Picking
    • Then go home and make something yummy with the apples (apple sauce, pie, fritters, bread).
  • Crunch in the leaves
    • Better yet, rake a huge pile to jump into!
  • Fall Cleaning
    • Set aside a block of time to neatly fold up your cleaned beach towels, pack up the pool toys and put away summer clothes.
  • Watch a new show
    • Tis the season for season premieres to start…try something new!
  • Go to a pumpkin patch
  • Make a scarecrow for your front yard
    • Take some old clothes and stuff with newspaper (or straw), add a mask and hat and find a place for your new friend to sit or stand in your yard.
  • Visit a corn maze
  • Enjoy a hay ride
  • Get out the fall decor
