list of suggestions for establishing a child’s afterschool routine

When children get home from school, you can bet that they’ve had an exhilarating yet exhausting day of concentrating, summoning their courage, cooperating, and playing, but their day doesn’t end there.  If a routine is established, there will be much less need for questions such as “What do I do?  I’m bored.”  or “How much longer until dinner?”  Setting up a routine for after school gives everyone an idea of what is expected and sets your children up for a productive and creative afternoon.

  • Remove important papers, homework, and lunch bags from back pack.
  • Hang up backpack or put in established place.
  • Meet together for tea and a snack.  Talk about the day.
  • Do homework or art projects.
  • Do chores (e.g. feed pets, put away laundry, etc).
  • Reading time
  • Play time
  • Help make dinner/set the table.

What steps are a part of your child’s afterschool/afternoon routine?
