list of fun rainy day activities

There are days when kids are at home (weekends, breaks, summer) and it is rainy.  Instead of spending too much time in front of the tv or computer, have a list ready of indoor activities to inspire creativity, imagination, stimulation, and fun. Gather everyone around for some fun as a group or individual.  Let them choose their own project, or draw a project for the group from a hat.  Keep basic materials on hand so you are ready for rain.

  • Hula Hoop Rug Tutorial
Kids can make their own colorful rug for their rooms or spaces using just a hula hoop and some old t-shirts.
  • Go Fishing
Create your own fish stories when you let your little ones do some indoor fishing with this fun game.
  • Groovy Lava Lamps
This photography blog shows this activity as summer fun, but I think this activity/science experiment would be perfect for the kitchen counter on a rainy day.
  • Pipe Cleaner Finger Puppets
It’s a craft project, no it’s a game.  Kids will have fun creating these little finger puppets, and then the fun continues as they put on a puppet show with their creations.
  • Enter the Lair of the Spider Queen
Create an obstacle course in a tight space using painter’s tape and streamers.
  • Marble Race Track
With just a pool noodle and some marbles, you can create a fun activity for your kids to race indoors.
  • Marshmallow Sculptures
You probably have lots of mini marshmallows leftover from the hot cocoa days of winter.  Put those to good use with some toothpicks to create a one-of-a-kind design.
  • Indoor Hopscotch
With a little coordination, this mat can be a project that turns into hours of active fun for rainy/snowy days to come.
  • Plastic Bottle Bowling
Recycle those plastic bottles into colorful bowling pins.
  • Let the Sunshine In
Even if it’s rainy outside, it can be sunny inside when you paint your windows with homemade window paints.
